Voutilainen 28Sport reaches $700,000, 2.9 times its estimate

Phillips' 88-lot New York Sessions sale opened 1 October and closes 9 October at 10 a.m. Eastern. Two F.P. Journe lots also sit above estimate; a Patek Philippe 5270 stays inside its $80,000 to $160,000 range.

What changed

An independent cleared its estimate. A Voutilainen 28Sport was bid to $700,000 against a $240,000 high estimate at Phillips New York, with two F.P. Journe lots also above estimate before the 9 October close.

What it means

  • If you are bidding Friday: The three lots running hot are all independents and the Patek is not. The premium is for scarcity of maker, not of reference.
  • If you value a 28Sport: The comparable set is eight watches and this is the onyx-dial one. That is why the $240,000 estimate stopped mattering.
  • If you consign heritage: A fresh-to-market Patek 5270 complete set sat inside $80,000 to $160,000 while independents tripled. Estimates are holding on heritage.
  • What this is not: A result. Bidding runs to 10 a.m. Eastern on 9 October and every figure here can still move before the hammer.

Nearly three times estimate

Seven hundred thousand. The top bid on the Voutilainen 28Sport was $700,000 against a $240,000 high estimate. Dividing one by the other gives 2.92 times, or 192% above.

Eight were made. The watch is one of eight in stainless steel and believed one of two with an onyx centre dial. Its first owner bought it in 2021.

Multiples are stated against the leg the source names: Voutilainen against its high estimate, the Centigraphe against its low, the Octa Lune against its high. Each is Carat Capital's own division and is printed with its leg so the two cannot be confused. $700,000/$240,000 = 2.92 times the high estimate, which is 192% above it.

Journe runs, Patek holds

Three and a half. Lot 40, a 2025 lineSport Centigraphe Souverain in hammered platinum, has climbed to 3.5 times its $60,000 low estimate during bidding.

Inside the range. Lot 50, a fresh-to-market Patek Philippe 5270 complete set, remained within its $80,000 to $160,000 estimate at the same point in the sale.

The lot that is a clock

Klimt on a cabinet. Lot 39, a Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos Marqueterie Gustav Klimt, carries a $70,000 to $140,000 estimate. Its marquetry panels re-create The Kiss and open at a hidden button.

It never winds. The Atmos movement runs on small shifts in room temperature. Phillips says this is the first of the edition to come to auction.

What to watch

  • 9 October 2026The 10 a.m. Eastern close at one-minute lot intervals, and whether the Voutilainen's $700,000 holds as a hammer price.
  • 9 October 2026Whether the Patek 5270 clears its $160,000 high estimate once the independents stop absorbing the room's attention.
  • Mid-October 2026Phillips' published total against the $235.5 million its spring watch season produced.

The story so far

  1. An F.P. Journe took HK$31,400,000 to top a HK$426m Sotheby's sale in Hong Kong.
  2. The trophy watch market cleared ninety per cent of lots, with Voutilainen among the makers named.

What would change this call

A close in which the Voutilainen's bid does not advance and the Journe lots retrace, which would make this a story about three early bidders rather than about demand for independents. Mid-sale bids are the weakest auction evidence there is.

Why a mid-sale bid is not a price

An online timed auction accepts bids over a window and closes lots in sequence, here at one-minute intervals. A bid standing days before the close is a floor set by whoever has committed so far, not a clearing price, and online sales routinely see the largest increments in the final minutes once bidders stop revealing their limits. A multiple quoted against an estimate also depends on which leg is used: three and a half times a low estimate and three and a half times a high estimate are very different sums of money, which is why each multiple here is printed with the leg it was taken from. Buyer's premium sits on top of every figure quoted.

Method

JCK's report was fetched to raw bytes, HTTP 200, 114,616 bytes, saved to newsroom/sources/2026-10-08/phillips.html, and read out of the article's own body text rather than from a whole-page sweep, because the page carries a popular-stories rail whose figures belong to other stories. Every multiple is this paper's own division and is shown: 700,000/240,000 = 2.92 times the high estimate, 192% above it. The 3.5 times on the Centigraphe and the near-2 times on the Octa Lune are the source's own multiples and are printed against the legs the source names, low and high respectively. Phillips' claim that this is the highest-value online sale its New York watch team has organised is the house's statement about its own history and is attributed rather than asserted.
