What it means
- If you price large D rounds: With no reserve, bidders set $243,200 on a D flawless 8-carat round. A Van Cleef D ring also missed its low.
- If you consign signed coloured pieces: Two Bulgari lots beat their highs; the premium basis is unstated.
- What this is not: A fall in D prices. Two lots is a small sample.

Notes on this table
Carat Capital's division. 243,200 / 250,000 = 97.3% of the low, 2.7% below it. 140,800 / 150,000 = 93.9% of the low, 6.1% below. 192,200 / 180,000 = 1.068, 6.8% above the high. 166,400 / 100,000 = 1.664, 66.4% above. Rapaport labels each figure 'Sale Price' and does not say whether it includes the buyer's premium. Nine of the ten prices equal 1.28 times a round figure, which suggests a hammer price plus premium; the percentages above compare sale price with estimate and would be wider on a hammer basis.
Signed coloured pieces ran ahead
Bulgari led. A Bulgari peridot and sapphire necklace made $153,600, against a $60,000 high estimate.
Earrings went further. Bulgari sapphire and emerald earrings sold for $128,000, against a $35,000 high.
A Webb pairing too. A 9.04-carat I VS1 ring sold with a David Webb ring jacket for $166,400, against a $100,000 high.

Corrections
Updated 21 October 2026: this article first gave the two Bulgari lots as 2.56 and 3.66 times their high estimates, including in its key figures. Rapaport does not say whether its sale prices include the buyer's premium, and nine of the ten equal 1.28 times a round figure, the pattern of a hammer price plus premium; estimates are usually quoted without it. The multiples are withdrawn until Christie's own results are read; the prices and estimates stand. The table's percentages are now labelled as sale price against estimate. What was right as published: every price and every estimate.
What would change this call
Large D rounds clearing above their high estimates at the December sales. Then this result reads as one online room on one day, not a price signal.
How an estimate range works
An auction house sets a low and a high estimate from comparable sales. A reserve, usually at or below the low, is the price under which the lot does not sell. A lot without reserve sells to the top bidder at any price, so a result under the low is a market reading, not a failed sale.
