8.17-carat D/IF ring carries $350,000 at Christie's, no reserve

Bidding on Jewels Online opened 6 October and closes 15 October, on Christie's own calendar. The round brilliant leads more than 260 lots; the next-highest estimate in the preview tops out at $280,000.

What changed

The top lot has no floor. Christie's put an 8.17-carat D, internally flawless round brilliant into Jewels Online at up to $350,000 and offered it without reserve. Bidding closes 15 October.

What it means

  • If you are bidding: The only floor is the next bidder. On a D/IF round of this size the comparable set is small enough that one buyer sets the print.
  • If you price comparable rounds: Watch what this clears against $350,000, not against the Graff lot's $280,000 ceiling. Different cut, different terms.
  • If you consign: A house taking its headline lot to no reserve is buying certainty of sale. That is a read on demand, not on the stone.
  • What this is not: A result. Bidding closes on 15 October and nothing in this sale has sold yet.

The stone and the terms

Up to three fifty. The 8.17-carat round brilliant is D in colour and internally flawless, and Christie's says it could fetch as much as $350,000. It is offered without reserve.

No low estimate. Every other lot in the preview carries a published low estimate. This one does not, so the only floor at the close is the next bid.

The $180,000 to $280,000 band belongs to the Graff 7.85-carat lot and not to the 8.17-carat headline stone; the two sit in the same document and were read apart lot by lot from the preview's own captions. Only the headline lot has no published low estimate.

Bidding is already open

Six to fifteen. Christie's own calendar lists online auction 24557 running 6 to 15 October and marks it happening now. The 15 October date is the close.

Over 260 lots. The sale carries more than 260 lots including Bulgari, Cartier and Harry Winston pieces. The headline stone leads a deep rather than a thin catalogue.

A crowded second tier

Graff at two eighty. The next-highest estimate is $180,000 to $280,000 on a Graff ring. Its stone is a 7.85-carat emerald-cut D, VS1 type IIa said to have internally flawless potential.

Three at two fifty. A Van Cleef & Arpels 5.22-carat ring, a 67-stone pear riviere and a 6.52-carat heart brilliant ring each carry $150,000 to $250,000.

What to watch

  • 15 October 2026The close at 260-plus lots, and what the no-reserve 8.17-carat clears against its $350,000 ceiling.
  • 15 October 2026Whether the Graff 7.85-carat makes its $180,000 low estimate, which is the sale's real second data point.
  • Late October 2026Christie's published sale total, the only figure that says whether online jewellery demand matched the preview's estimates.

The story so far

  1. A different 8.17-carat stone, an emerald-cut F VS1, made $275,000 against a $200,000 high at Heritage.

Go deeper

What would change this call

A result at or below the Graff lot's $280,000, which would say the no-reserve term cost the house money rather than finding a deeper bidder. Nothing in a preview predicts a hammer price.

What no reserve means

A reserve is a confidential minimum below which a consignor will not sell; an estimate range is a published guide and is not itself a floor. A lot offered without reserve can sell at whatever the highest bid is, which removes the risk of the lot going unsold and transfers all price risk to the consignor. Houses use the term on property they are confident will attract competition, and on online sales where a bought-in lot is a visible failure. The absence of a published low estimate on this lot, where every comparable lot has one, is consistent with that term rather than an omission.

Method

Rapaport's report was fetched to raw bytes, HTTP 200, 235,092 bytes, saved to newsroom/sources/2026-10-08/christies-rap.html. Exact-digit greps on that saved file: '8.17-carat' four hits, '$350,000' seven, '260 lots' one, 'without reserve' one. The $350,000 was read in the article's own opening body paragraph; the $180,000 to $280,000 band was read in a figure caption belonging to a different lot in the same document, and the two were kept apart rather than grepped together, because a whole-page figure sweep on a multi-lot preview cannot tell one lot's estimate from another's. All nine subsidiary estimates in the table were read lot by lot out of the preview's own captions. A third door was then opened on Christie's own site, HTTP 200, 1,032,614 bytes, saved as christies-sale.html: it carries 'Jewels Online' seven times and the string 'Online Auction 24557 6-15 OCT 2026 Jewels Online New York' with a happening-now marker, which establishes the bidding window independently of Rapaport. The single '8.17' hit on that Christie's page was opened and is an SVG path coordinate, not a lot reference, so the calendar page confirms the sale and the dates but not the stone. Archive check, searched in website/content/articles.json: 'Jewels Online' returns zero hits. Carat Capital's prior 8.17-carat hits were checked by the Bureau and are a different stone, an emerald-cut F VS1 that already sold for $275,000 at a past sale, so same carat weight, different cut, grade and event.
