Why a jade estimate is not a carat price
A diamond estimate can be reasoned back to a per-carat figure because the trade prices diamonds that way, by weight, colour and clarity against a published list. Jadeite has no such list. Value in a bead necklace comes from translucency, the evenness and saturation of colour, and above all from matching: a strand of thirty-nine beads that agree with each other in tone and diameter is worth a large multiple of thirty-nine similar beads that do not. Burmese origin carries a premium of its own, and the finest material is described in the trade by terms that are qualitative rather than measured. That is why a house publishes a range for a jade lot and why the range can be wide. It is also why the realised price, when it comes, is a more useful mark than the estimate, and why a single strand selling well can move what dealers ask for comparable material.
