Seventy dollars to Southampton: the jewelry trade pitches its summer tent

The Hamptons Jewelry Show returns July 23–26 — 36,000 square feet at the Southampton Fairgrounds, a $200 opening preview, $70 day passes, and two new pavilions aimed squarely at where American luxury money spends August.

What changed

The second annual Hamptons Jewelry Show opens Thursday, running July 23–26 across a 36,000-square-foot complex at the Southampton Fairgrounds on County Road 39.

What it means · The Desk’s View

Watch the copycats, not the receipts. If a curated retail fair can hold margins in the Hamptons for a second summer, Aspen, Palm Beach and Nantucket editions are a matter of time — and the case for meeting the customer where she vacations, rather than where the trade convenes, gets a proof point the majors will have to answer.

IPrice the ticket like the zip code

Entry is priced like the neighborhood: $200 for the VIP opening preview on Thursday evening, 5 to 9:30 p.m., and $70 for a day pass Friday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The producers — the team behind the Hamptons Fine Art Fair, with 40-year trade veteran Hilary Joy Diaz curating — are betting that the American jewelry customer worth traveling for is already out east.

Year two adds structure to the bet. A Piazza Italia pavilion gathers Italian designers and goldsmithing under one banner, while a new Studio Artists Galleria showcases individual artisans.

The exhibitor list mixes returning names — Brilliant Stars, Getana & Co., Greenwich Bazaar, Heera Moti, Shana Kroz, Treasure Jewelry, Jenni Gault — with more than a dozen newcomers including Parisian watchmaker Charles Oudin, German Kabirski, Ana Katarina and the Carbon Watch Company, per National Jeweler.

IIAn art fair, not a trade floor

The format itself is the interesting part. Trade shows are built where wholesale buyers are; the Hamptons show inverts the model and builds where the end customer summers, collapsing designer, dealer and collector into one tent with a ticket price that filters for intent.

It is closer to an art fair than to Vegas — which is precisely the comparison its producers, who run one, intend.

IIIThe marginal dollar summers out east

Nothing about a fairgrounds tent replaces the order books written at the majors. But as a reading of where the trade thinks the marginal American luxury dollar lives in July — within driving distance of a $70 ticket and a sandy parking lot in Southampton — it is hard to improve on.
