Court winds up Petra's treasury unit over £5.65m tax claim
The order came at the 14 October hearing, nine days after Questco was named to run the strategic review. A restructuring accountant joined the board as senior independent director on 13 October.

What changed
The petition became an order. A court made a winding-up order against Petra Diamonds UK Treasury on 14 October over £5,647,811.32 of corporation tax. Petra says the unit is non-operating and its mines are not directly affected.
What it means
- If you lend to Petra: Petra is assessing what the order means for its financing and refinancing talks, and has published no conclusion.
- If you want Petra's assets: Questco runs the strategic review and asks interested parties to contact it.
- What this is not: A group insolvency. The order names one non-operating subsidiary.

One subsidiary is named
The interest never arrived. HMRC's claim covers the year ended 30 June 2025. It arose on interest accrued on a receivable from Ealing Management Services, another Petra subsidiary, and that interest was never received.
Operations sit elsewhere. Petra says PDUK Treasury and Ealing own and operate none of its mines. Its principal asset is Cullinan, and Finsch entered business rescue on 29 May 2026.

The 5, 13 and 14 October rows were read from the RNS bodies. The 1 and 2 October rows are from Carat Capital's 5 October report on the petition, which read those filings. £5.65m is £5,647,811.32 rounded to the nearest ten thousand pounds.
An adviser now runs the review
Questco holds the process. Petra appointed Questco Corporate Advisory on 5 October to manage the strategic review it opened on 1 October. Interested parties are told to contact Questco director Ciska Kloppers.
The board added restructuring. Piers Marsden became senior independent director on 13 October. He is a chartered accountant with over 20 years in turnarounds and capital restructurings, mostly in mining.
Committees were merged. Lerato Molebatsi, interim chair since 1 October, now chairs a combined remuneration and nomination committee. Marsden joins every board committee.

The story so far

What would change this call
A filing that ties the order to Petra's lenders. If Petra says the winding-up is a default or cross-default under its financing, the subsidiary-only reading here fails and the story becomes the group's balance sheet.
How a winding-up order reaches a group
A winding-up order is a court's instruction that a company be liquidated, usually on a creditor's petition over an unpaid debt. It binds the named company only. Whether it reaches the rest of a group depends on the group's lending documents, which can treat a subsidiary's insolvency as a default. Petra has said only that it is assessing the implications.
