Gold takes the counter; pearls and gem-set keep a quieter lane

As gold jewelry dominates counters worldwide, the color side splits: pearls had a surprisingly strong first half in the US, while fixed-price gem-set pieces slipped about 1% in mainland China.

§1Pearls hold their own.

While bullion writes the headlines and gold jewelry drives counters from Mumbai to Hong Kong, the color side of the trade is quietly sorting itself into winners and casualties. In the United States, pearl jewelry posted what analysts called a surprisingly strong first half, one of the standout categories in a market that grew 8.6% overall. Pearls, priced on nacre, luster and match rather than on metal weight, held their own in a year when weight was everything.

The other end of the color trade gave ground. In mainland China, Chow Tai Fook's fixed-price jewelry, the design-led, gem-set pieces that carry a maker's markup, slipped about 1% on a same-store basis in the quarter to June, even as the chain's weight-based gold jewelry leapt 38%. When a gold chain reads as savings, a gem-set pendant has to justify itself on feeling, not value, and this year feeling lost the argument at the Chinese counter.

§2The middle gives way.

The split is really one question asked twice. When gold is cheap enough to buy as a store of wealth, design and color compete on emotion alone, and the categories that win are the ones with their own scarcity to sell. Tennis bracelets, up 14% in the US, show that diamonds still move when the format is right; pearls show that a stone with no substitute keeps its lane. The losers are the middle pieces bought as gifts and priced as commodities.

§3Sell the thing gold is not.

That is the argument high summer usually settles. The season's high-jewellery launches lean hard on craft, heritage and rare stones precisely because those are the things a gram of gold cannot offer, and in a year of record metal the maisons selling rarity have the cleaner story. The color desk that thrives now is the one that stops competing with bullion on price and starts competing with it on the one thing gold does not have, which is a face.

Pearls and fine color are not losing to gold so much as being asked to prove they are not gold, and the good ones can. Sell the strand and the signed piece on rarity and hand, not on carat weight, because

the shopper who wants value already bought the chain, and the one standing at the color case is there for something the metal counter cannot sell them.
