Middle West Partners completes its purchase of Lugano
The high-end jeweller leaves Chapter 11 with four of the ten boutiques it had in 2025 open and its interim chief executive made permanent. Six closed during the bankruptcy.
By Carat Capital
What changed
The sale is complete. Middle West Partners has bought Lugano Diamonds out of Chapter 11, with support from several of the jeweller's clients. Interim chief executive Josh Gaynor has been made permanent and says the purchase is now complete.
What it means
- If you supply Lugano: Four boutiques and the Newport Beach workshop and headquarters remain. Six of the ten stores the company had in 2025 closed during the bankruptcy.
- If you track the parent: Compass Diversified announced a plan of liquidation for the assets, which went to Enhanced Retail Funding, a division of Gordon Brothers, before this purchase.
- What this is not: A priced transaction or a plan. No sum is disclosed, and Gaynor says it is too early to discuss what the company does next.

Clients backed the buyer
The purchase is closed. Lugano Diamonds has been bought by investment firm Middle West Partners, with support from several of the jeweller's own clients. Gaynor says 'the purchase of the company is now complete.'
The chief is confirmed. Josh Gaynor, a Bulgari veteran who has served as interim chief executive since last year, has been named permanent chief executive.
Plans are withheld. Gaynor told JCK it is too early to discuss future plans for the company. No strategy, target or figure is given.

Notes on this table
The store counts tie out and are printed so they can be checked: ten stores in 2025 less the six the report says closed during the bankruptcy leaves four, which is the number of boutiques the report lists by city. That is the only arithmetic available in this story, because the transaction itself carries no figure at all. No purchase price, no revenue, no asset value and no creditor recovery appears anywhere in the report, and this paper has not supplied any of them. Gaynor's one published statement about the future is that it is too early to discuss plans.
Four cities and a workshop
The surviving estate. In a statement Gaynor said the four boutiques, in Newport Beach, Aspen, Ocala and Miami, will remain open.
Six did not survive. The company had grown to ten stores in 2025. Six closed during the bankruptcy, leaving the four named.
Manufacturing stays put. The headquarters will remain in Newport Beach, which is also home to Lugano's jewellery workshop.
From liquidation to sale
Survival looked unlikely. The report calls the purchase a surprising turn for a scandal-tarred company whose survival prospects had seemed slim.
The parent wound down. Then-owner Compass Diversified announced a plan of liquidation for the assets, which were sold to Enhanced Retail Funding, a division of Gordon Brothers.
The filing followed allegations. Lugano filed for Chapter 11 last year following allegations against its former chief executive, reported here when the regulator sued him.
What to watch
- When disclosedA purchase price. None appears in the report and the buyer is a private firm.
- OngoingWhether any of the six closed stores reopens. Gaynor says it is too early to discuss plans.
- OngoingThe securities case against the former chief executive, which is separate from this sale.

What would change this call
A price, or a correction to the store count. This article has one source and no transaction figure, so the whole of it rests on JCK's reporting and on Gaynor's own on-the-record statement that the purchase is complete. If a filing later shows the sale as conditional rather than closed, the central claim is wrong. The store arithmetic is the only part that is internally checkable, and it checks.
What a Chapter 11 sale leaves behind, and what it does not
A Chapter 11 sale moves a business out of bankruptcy by transferring its assets to a buyer, and the thing that distinguishes it from an ordinary acquisition is what the buyer does not take. Leases the estate has rejected, trade debts, and in most structures the liabilities attached to the conduct that caused the filing stay behind with the estate rather than travelling with the business. That is why six closed stores and four open ones can be the outcome of a single transaction: the leases that were worth keeping were assumed and the rest were not, and the count of surviving boutiques is a statement about which locations made money rather than about the buyer's ambition. It also explains why no price is published. Middle West Partners is a private investment firm, Lugano's listed former parent has already written the business down and announced a plan of liquidation for the assets, and nothing in a private purchase from an estate requires either side to disclose a sum. The figure that would say what Lugano is now worth therefore does not exist in public, and this paper has reported the absence rather than estimating it. The securities case against the founder and former chief executive, which this paper covered on 5 September, is a separate proceeding against a person and is unaffected by the sale of the company.
