Lab-grown producers' council threatens action over 'synthetic'

The Diamond Producers Council told jewelers on 20 October to reject CIBJO's September call for the word. It says its members grow more than 20 million carats a year.

What changed

Lab-grown growers push back. The Diamond Producers Council, which speaks for lab-grown producers, told jewelers to reject CIBJO's 'synthetic' as biased and deceptive. It says it will initiate proceedings against jewelers who use the word deceptively.

What it means

  • If you sell lab-grown in the US: Check tags and listings that say 'synthetic' against US consumer law, not CIBJO's Blue Books.
  • If you sell natural: The council says a premium paid for a costlier mined stone may count as economic injury in assessing damages.
  • What this is not: A lawsuit. The council names no defendant and no court.

A legal notice, no defendant.

Proceedings promised. The council says it will initiate proceedings against jewelers who use 'synthetic' deceptively. Its notice also covers trade organisations and other market participants.

Damages framed. Where a buyer pays more for a mined diamond after being misled, the council says the premium may be economic injury. It is weighing claims on behalf of classes of consumers.

The council's row and its reading of the FTC are from its 20 October statement. CIBJO's decision and the FTC, France and Russia rows are from CIBJO's release as Carat Capital reported it on 8 September.

Voluntary books, local law.

CIBJO cannot compel. “CIBJO's Blue Books are voluntary recommendations, not regulations,” the council said. A jeweler's duties come from consumer law where it trades, it says.

Two readings of Washington. The council says the FTC removed 'synthetic' from its examples of recommended qualifiers. CIBJO's release, as Carat Capital reported in September, says the FTC still allows the word.

A survey cited. The council cites a 2016 survey, submitted to the FTC by IGDA, in which 56% took 'synthetic diamond' to mean an imitation.

4Cs next, the council says.

Grading in the frame. The council says CIBJO's 2026 Diamond Commission report calls for exploring every possible way to keep the 4Cs for natural diamonds. The council says that could keep lab-grown stones from using the same four terms.

What to watch

  • Not datedAny CIBJO reply to the council. The test is whether it defends 'synthetic' as disclosure or drops the 4Cs plan.
  • Holiday season 2026Whether the council names a jeweler or files a claim. Until then the notice is a threat, not a case.
  • 2028The FTC's next Jewelry Guides revision, where the US term is set, per CIBJO's release.

The story so far

  1. CIBJO backed 'synthetic' alone; the FTC keeps three terms to 2028.
  2. Russia required lab-grown tags to say synthetic from 1 September.
  3. CIBJO moved to strike 'laboratory-grown' from its Blue Books.

Corrections1 note

Corrected, 27 October 2026: a section was headed 'The 4Cs are next.' and said CIBJO's report 'would deny' lab-grown stones the four grading terms. The council's statement says the report calls for exploring 'every way possible' to restrict the 4Cs, 'potentially preventing' that use; the heading and sentence now attribute it to the council and keep its hedge. The page said the notice 'names' trade organisations; it covers them by category and names none, as the page also says. A line said a misled buyer 'could ground a damages claim'; the council says the price premium 'may constitute' economic injury in assessing damages, and the line now says so. What was right as published: every figure and the quote. Found by Carat Capital's Standards desk and Managing Editor on 26 October 2026.

What would change this call

A filed claim, or an FTC statement backing one term. Either would turn a trade dispute into a legal rule a jeweler must follow.

Who the council is

The Diamond Producers Council advocates for lab-grown diamonds and the producers who grow them, by its own description. It is not the African Diamond Producers Association, a natural-mining body that backed 'synthetic' alongside CIBJO in September.
