What changed
Sotheby's priced a pink. JCK reports Sotheby's has estimated an unmounted 8.63-carat fancy intense pink diamond at CHF 3.3 million to CHF 5 million. It leads the house's High Jewelry sale in Geneva.
What it means
- If you bid on coloured diamonds: The high estimate is about CHF 579,000 a carat, under the CHF 625,000 Christie's put on its 24-carat pink.
- If you consign before Geneva: Four coloured diamonds here carry low estimates of CHF 850,000 or more.
- What this is not: A price. These are estimates, relayed by JCK, for a sale on 11 November.

The yellow is fourth. An 18.03-carat fancy vivid yellow is estimated at CHF 850,000 to CHF 1.6 million, JCK reports.

Estimates as JCK prints them. Carat Capital has not read Sotheby's catalogue. 'Pigeon blood' and 'unheated' are the house's descriptions as JCK relays them; JCK cites no laboratory report. The 8.11 ct row reads 'carries the same range' in JCK.
Ceylon sapphires listed as unheated.
Ruby from CHF 850,000. A ring with a 5.027-carat ruby described as pigeon blood carries CHF 850,000 to CHF 1.3 million. JCK cites no laboratory report for the description.
Heat treatment is named. Sotheby's lists several large Ceylon sapphires as unheated, JCK reports. The largest named is a 69.44-carat stone in a Harry Winston ring, at CHF 580,000 to CHF 750,000.
Provenance carries older pieces.
Rubinstein, then Wrightsman. An 1883 convertible necklace attributed to Boucheron, centred on a heart-shaped sapphire, belonged to Helena Rubinstein and then Jayne Wrightsman. It carries CHF 330,000 to CHF 650,000.
Bulgari's Burmese bib. A circa 1970 Bulgari necklace of 35 Burmese sapphires hung from a diamond bib carries CHF 130,000 to CHF 200,000.

What would change this call
An 8.63-carat pink that fails to reach its CHF 3.3 million low estimate, a day after Christie's offers its 24-carat pink, would mark Geneva's November week as soft for coloured diamonds.
What an estimate is
An estimate is the range the house expects bidding to reach, agreed with the consignor. It is not a price. JCK's page does not say whether these figures include buyer's premium.
