Petra's revenue caves as the small-stone squeeze bites

Fourth-quarter revenue fell to $38 million, down 44% from the prior quarter, as weak tender prices hit smaller goods. Net debt climbed to $322 million and Finsch entered a business-rescue process.

What changed

Petra Diamonds put a hard number on how heavy the bottom of the market still feels.

What it means · The Desk’s View

This is what the diamond downturn looks like when it reaches a single-digit producer without a balance sheet to wait it out. The recovery in small stones that Rapaport keeps flagging is real, but it has to arrive at the mine gate as price, not just as sentiment — and for Petra the clock and the covenant are both running.

IA number for the squeeze

Fourth-quarter revenue for its 2026 financial year came in at $38 million, down forty-four percent from the $68 million of the prior quarter, the miner blaming weaker tender prices and a product mix skewed to exactly the smaller stones that suffered most in the downturn.

For a producer already restructuring, a quarter that light is less a stumble than a squeeze.

The balance sheet shows the strain. Consolidated net debt rose to $322 million at the end of June from $298 million three months earlier.

A senior lender approved a 300-million-rand working-capital facility running into early 2028, and Petra deferred $6 million of July interest to January 2027 — the moves of a company buying time rather than spending from strength.

IIBuying time, not spending strength

Operationally the retrenchment is real. The Finsch mine's production was suspended and restructuring practitioners were appointed in June under a business-rescue process, while the flagship Cullinan mine runs an optimization drive to squeeze out cash.

A ransomware incident late in the quarter added insult, though Petra said its mining control systems stayed protected and operations continued safely.

IIIWeather you can't wait out

The context matters as much as the numbers. Petra sits at the small-and-mid end of the natural-diamond market, the segment lab-grown stones hollowed out first and hardest, and it is carrying mine-level fixed costs into a price environment that has punished exactly its goods.

Even De Beers is preparing to bend its rough book toward the market on the smallest sizes; a miner without that pricing power feels the same weather as weather.
