ICBC sets gold margin at 190%, forced-sale line at 170%
More than 10 Chinese banks have shut or tightened personal access to Shanghai Gold Exchange metals trading this year. The count stood at 6 on 9 September; Pudong Development closes its channel on 25 September.
The margin outweighs the metal. ICBC now requires 190% of contract value as standard margin on Shanghai Gold Exchange deferred gold and silver contracts, up from 140%.
If you trade gold through a Chinese bank app: Check your margin ratio before Monday. At 190% the collateral exceeds the position.
If you price Chinese retail demand: The exchange route keeps narrowing. Counters and jewellery shops are what remain.
What this is not: A ban on owning gold. Bars and shop counters are untouched.

IThe margin doubled in three weeks
Two steps, one quarter. ICBC raised the standard margin ratio on Shanghai Gold Exchange deferred contracts to 140% in June, then to 190% in July.
The sell-out line moved. The forced-liquidation margin went from 120% to 170% in the July step, so a losing position is closed out sooner.
IITen banks out, six reported
Nine banks named. The 17 September report names ICBC, Construction Bank, Bank of Communications, Bank of China, Postal Savings, China Merchants, CITIC, Guangfa and Ping An.
Six was the count. Carat Capital documented 6 banks leaving the channel on 9 September.
Ten is the tally. The count published in September runs above 10 banks.
IIIVolatility is the stated cause
Gold swung hard. The 21st Century Business Herald attributes the wave to precious-metals volatility, citing intraday spot gold ranges above 5% in September.
01What would change this call+
A bank reopening the channel, or ICBC cutting the ratio back. Margin ratios are set by notice and withdrawn by notice, and none of the banks named has published a reversal.
02How a deferred-contract margin works+
Shanghai Gold Exchange deferred contracts, Au(T+D), mAu(T+D) and Ag(T+D), settle on a rolling basis rather than on a fixed date, and a bank acting as agent for an individual holds margin against the position. A ratio above 100% means the collateral exceeds the notional value of the contract, which removes the leverage the product exists to provide. The forced-liquidation ratio is the separate level at which the bank closes the position without asking. Raising one and raising the other are different levers: the first prices the trade, the second shortens the rope.
03Method · the desk’s arithmetic+
Two dated items from the 21st Century Business Herald were fetched directly on 20 September 2026 and each was read for the figures printed here rather than for a summary. The 17 September item carries the sentence that more than 10 banks have announced closure or material tightening of personal gold-trading channels this year, and names ICBC, Construction Bank, Bank of Communications, Bank of China, Postal Savings, China Merchants, CITIC, Guangfa and Ping An. The 9 July item carries ICBC's own adjustment, standard margin from 140% to 190% and forced-liquidation margin from 120% to 170%, and is the earlier and more precise of the two on the ratios; the 17 September item dates the first step to 18 June. Jinrongjie's 17 September report, fetched separately, carries the same bank list and the same ratios, which is why the ratios are printed as corroborated rather than single-outlet. The 5% figure is the outlet's own characterisation of September intraday ranges and is attributed in the body rather than adopted. No contract value, no customer count and no volume figure is published by any bank named, so none is printed. ARCHIVE: Chinese banks leaving Shanghai Gold Exchange personal agency business - ours of 2026-09-09 covers the position as at 9 September 2026, 6 banks documented, with Pudong Development Bank's 25 September closure as its news; this item covers the position as at 17 September 2026, above 10 banks, and adds ICBC's margin escalation of 18 June and 9 July 2026, which has not appeared in this paper. SAME ENTITY, LATER PERIOD, DIFFERENT HEADLINE FIGURE, so ADVANCED, not a repeat.
